Evelyn Is Still Baking

I tried to make kuih lapis today which turned out to be a failure, mainly because I didn't realise that you had to constantly stir the batter when you make the layers because the flour sinks to the bottom. As a result, I had a really hard crusted kuih which was really mushy in the middle. Yuck. Will re-attempt again when my self esteem returns.

Lately I've been very interested to make all the Malaysian sweets that I've been craving like onde onde, sri muka and bubur pulut hitam. Haven't actually made them, but plan to.

Here are a few photos of what I've been baking/cooking lately. I'm surprised this craze has lasted.

1. Fried Rice - This is by far the most complete fried rice I've ever fried in my life. I am usually not this hardworking...even though fried rice is supposed to be easy.

2. Scones - Went to a dessert buffet a week ago, ate the best scones I've ever tasted in my life and decided to come home and try to replicate it. Reasonably successful but not amazingly out there yet.

3. Orange & Poppy Seed Muffins - Didn't really like them because the poppy seeds tend to get stuck between teeth. However, many people commented that it was nice and crunchy. Depends on what you like I guess.

4. Caramel Slices - Probably my most successful attempt of the week.

5. Kaya Swiss Roll - To use up all the kaya I made. Had to find a way to get rid of it. I was so happy that my swiss roll managed to roll this time even though it wasn't really perfect - previously I had to make swiss sandwiches instead of rolls. Very happy.
