Baking Accomplishments

When I first got back to Melbourne a couple of months ago my friends from dentistry bought me a cake mixer for my birthday, because I was very into baking at that time. Isn't it ironic? Here we are telling our patients to stop eating sugar and secretly we're baking various sweet things as pick-me-ups.

I was delighted with the present and baked practically everyday. Since I was new to the act, everything was exciting, from sifting flour to grating chocolate. Now I see it as a chore. Especially grating chocolate - I've grated off my own skin a few times by now.

Anyway, I've stopped doing it for about a month now except for specific reasons (birthdays, pot luck, depression) due to the fact that baking was proving to be a very expensive hobby and I just didn't have time to bake and be a model dental student at the same time. However, here are a few pictures of a couple of things I baked. I'm not very hardworking when it comes to taking pictures so there's only a few for all to see.

1. Chocolate Ripple Cake - More like a log really. One of my first attempts, not one I'm really proud of. Took a photo of it for the sake of it because it was my first. Haha...

2.Almond Berry Slices - The first slices I ever made. Came out quite well, even if I do say so myself. Tempted to try making them again...almonds are one of my favourite nuts!

3. Pineapple Upside Down Cake - I love the way the cake looks because of the cherries!! I've always wanted to replicate this but never had the opportunity due to the many other recipes out there that I have not explored.

4. Housewarming Cake - Baked this for my friend's housewarming about a month ago. It's actually a butter cake covered with sugar icing. Spent ages getting the colors right. Next time I'm going to make hearts instead of polka-dots. If there is a next time.

5.Portuguese Custard Tarts - I'm actually very proud of these tarts... mainly because the custard came out exactly the way I wanted it to.

6. Birthday Cake - For my friend's 21st. It's some sort of chocolate cake - I've forgotten the name. I didn't actually get a chance to taste it myself because I left the party early.

Yes, I baked everything from scratch and no, I do not know how to bake cheesecakes yet. Currently trying to experiment with pies and scones. Will post up more pictures when I can be bothered.

cheesecakes and pies are very easy and very fun. Personally prefer pies, as there's only so much cheesecake one can eat before having to buy new pants.
